Become a Surf Lifesaver without even getting wet!

The Observers Award is is an enrty level award available to member 13 years and up of any ability. It allows you to assist with beach patrols* even if you don’t have the confidence to go in the water.

The Observers Award provides you with the skills and knowledge to read the surf and recognise someone in difficulty.

This course has online learning component that can be completed in your own time, followed by a practical assessment of signals.

So if you have always wanted to get involved, why not give this award a go?

*This award is to be utilised with another award such as a First Aid Certificate, Advanced Resuscitation or Radio Operators.

Skills Maintenance Proficiency Requirements

Each year ALL award holders must complete their Skills Maintenance prior to 31 December.

This is a 2 step process for most; Online Theory and Face to Face

All Bronze Medallion and SRC holders must complete the online theory which can be found in your SLS Members Area portal.  Please note – there are no online questions for Radio, Resus, ART or Observers Award.
  • Log into your SLS Members Area portal
  • Select ‘eLearning’ studying in QLD
  • Click ‘Log into eLearning’
  • Log in to The Hub with your Members Area account and Password
  • Click ‘Skills Maitenance’
  • Select ‘Training Library’
  • Select 2023 Skills Maintenance>View courses> Enrol 
  • Click ‘My Training’ on the side tab 
  • Scroll down to ‘Not Started or in Progress Courses’ and click ‘View’ on your Skills maintenance course 
There are only a 6 questions for the Bronze proficiency, if you watch the short video and complete the scenarios beforehand it will help with the answers to the questions.
All Bronze Medallion, SRC, Observers, ART, IRBD, IRBC, Resus and Radio award holders must register and attend a face-to-face session.  Dates for our Skills Maintenance are coming soon.
 
* Please note – ALL start times are 8am sharp (Qld time) with the exception of the 10th December which is 10.40am sharp (Qld time).  Please arrive early to register and be ready to commence at the start time  There may be issues with the online system and daylight savings time zones, you may need to ignore the start time listed online. 
 
 
* All members completing Skills Maintenance for Bronze, SRC & IRB awards must wear a noddy cap in the water (club cap or high vis cap – NOT a patrol cap)
 
 
* People doing IRB Skills Maintenance need to have shorts or wetsuit bottoms to wear in the boat.
You must register to attend one of the above sessions.  To register
  • Log into your SLS Members Area portal
  • Select ‘eLearning’
  • Click ‘Log into eLearning’
  • Select ‘training event’
  • Click through until you find the date you wish to attend and click that event, then click ‘Enrol’
  • You will be given a list of awards you are eligible to renew.  Please make sure all boxes are ticked for awards you hold then click ‘Enrol’
* Please note – any online theory questions will need to be completed before registering your attendance.
